Questions asked regarding Hypnosis
What is hypnosis?
The state of Hypnosis is likened to the state between sleep and wakefulness - an altered state of awareness
Is hypnosis safe?
Yes. It is a safe, natural part of human experience. Always protected by our subconscious, trance is part of every day life (have you ever daydreamed?). We are already proficient in its use, we simply don't recognise it
Who can be hypnotised?
Just about everyone, if they choose and are able to concentrate on the directions of the hypnotherapist
What is it like to be hypnotised?
In experiencing altered states it should be acknowledged that trance is slightly different for everyone. Most find it extremely pleasant, enjoyable and relaxing, saying that they have never felt so agreeably relaxed and comfortable before
Am I too strong willed to be hypnotised?
Strength of will plays no part in the process
I'm too intelligent to be hypnotised!
Wrong - the higher the intelligence and imagination the better.
Will the hypnotherapist be mysterious and use a swinging watch or other paraphernalia to hypnotise me?
No. A competent hypnotherapist needs no airs, graces or spookiness. It is highly unlikely that anything will be used other than the hypnotherapist's voice and relaxing music to talk you into a pleasant, enjoyable state of relaxation.
Do hypnotised persons lose control of themselves?
Quite the opposite, the client is in control of their altered state and will do only that which seems rightful and helpful
Could I get 'stuck in trance?
No. It simply doesn't happen. Many enjoy being in hypnosis so much, they sometimes are reluctant to return to a normal state of awareness, but they will come out of this state as soon as they are ready. Even if they are determined to stay in indefinitely, the altered state turns into ordinary sleep, and they shortly awaken feeling refreshed and relaxed
Will I be unconscious when in hypnosis?
No. No loss of consciousness is involved. In some 90% of hypnotic trances one will be perfectly aware of their surroundings, including sounds, movements and smells and will be hypersensitive to touch
What can hypnosis be used for?
Hypnosis has many uses, it is impossible to list them all - the more common uses are:
Weight Control, Stopping Smoking, Pain Control, Migraine, Irritable Bowel Syndrome,Stress Management, Sexual, Social and Psychological problems, Surgery (To allay fears of, and speed recovery from surgery/treatment) and Childbirth. It is also widely used to improve sports skills, learning and business skills
Should I use hypnosis as an alternative to seeing my doctor?
Never. It is not an alternative to seeking proper medical care. Hypnosis is a COMPLEMENTARY therapy and should be used in partnership with conventional medicine. The Hypnotherapist cannot replace your G.P's training in diagnosis.Check out health problems first with your G.P. then you can combine physicians and hypnotherapists healing methods
Can I be forced into a trance?
No. It is a state of mind that needs your full co-operation. No-one goes against their own unique code of behaviour in hypnosis
Will I be in the hypnotherapists "power"?
Certainly not. Hypnotherapists cannot force anyone to do anything against their will. You can choose not to comply with any disagreeable suggestion. Many people in hypnosis are much more determined and assertive than in their normal state of mind
Will I reveal any secrets?
No. It's not a truth drug. You can choose what to reveal, moreover you can lie in trance
Could the hypnotherapist take advantage of me in any way?
No. He/She has no more opportunity to exploit than a hairdresser, plumber or local shopkeeper. But just as it is important to find a competent hairdresser etc. it is equally important to make sure you have a good and capable hypnotherapist who is a member of an Organisation which has a proper Code of Ethics, Conduct and Disciplinary Procedure and has suitable insurance cover.
